Recent projects include designing the interiors for Van Cleef and Arpels stores in London, Monte Carlo, Beverley Hills and Tokyo and the design of a spectacular Resort Hotel and Spa on the edge of the Brazilian rainforest. She is also a successful couturier with an international clientele.

Cellular DNA Protection Day Cream

Suitable for all skin types, this light naturally scented day cream provides long-lasting environmental protection and continuous hydration for healthy revitalised skin. It contains a combination of 20 natural ingredients, including 14 antioxidants, to neutralise the negative effect of free radicals generated by UV light, environmental factors and stress whilst also providing broad spectrum SPF 15 UVA/UVB protection, with the maximum level of protection against UVA rays.

The combination of potent antioxidants helps protect the DNA molecule within skin cells against environmental damage, as shown by clinical trials assessing the status of the P53 molecule, which is known as the guardian of the genome.

Radical Defence Serum

Zelens Skin Science Radical Defence Serum is formulated using a unique combination of antioxidants, moisturizers and plant extracts which work synergistically to keep your skin looking healthy and vibrant.

The synergistic ingredient formulation was selected using multiple studies of the efficacy of herbal medicine, particularly Kampo medicine (Japanese traditional herbal medicine), and on the basis of scientific evidence from traditional medicine, skin pharmacology and biology.

The light, refreshing fragrance of the creams comes from Shiso extract, a Japanese mint leaf known to possess antioxidant, anti inflammatory and anti allergenic properties

Each individual ingredient is encapsulated using advanced liposome technology that ensures the active ingredients of the serum can penetrate the epidermis (the outer layer of the skin, which is impermeable for most substances) and is released at a controlled rate, targeting specific molecules.

Research & Testing:

Radical Defence Serum has been proven to neutralise all three types of free radicals (ROS, RNS and RCS).

Environmental aggressors such as UV rays, pollution, alcohol and cigarette smoke cause the formation of hazardous free radicals which attack and cause oxidative damage to cellular molecules of the skin: proteins, lipids and DNA.

Efficacy against ROS

The efficacy of the Radical Defence Serum to fight Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) is demonstrated by a test examining the vitality of the human cells exposed to a damaging molecule – hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Cell viability (expressed in %) was determined by the MTT method, (measured by the activity of the enzyme mitochondrial dehydrogenase). The test showed that when the Serum concentration was increased, there was an increase in the vitality of the cells.

Efficacy against RNS

The efficacy of Radical Defence Serum to eliminate Reactive Nitrogen Species (RNS) was demonstrated by measuring the degradation of the amino-acid called tyrosine to 3-nitrotyrosine induced by peroxynitrite. In a control sample over 90% of tyrosine was destroyed – whilst an application of the Radical Defence Serum significantly protected tyrosine from peroxynitrate, with only 8% of tyrosine being destroyed. The results show that the Radical Defence Serum significantly reduces the production of 3-nitrotyrosine and therefore provides excellent protection against damaging RNS.

Efficacy against RCS

Reactive carbonyl species (RCS) cause glycation (the adding of sugar molecules to a protein) that initiates a chain of chemical reactions leading to the formation of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs). This reaction, (the Maillard reaction), causes irreversible damage of two major skin proteins – collagen and elastin, leading to premature skin ageing.

Zelens Dermatological tested the anti-glycation potential of Radical Defence Serum in-vitro and found that the addition of the Serum inhibited the formation of AGEs by 92%. When the same test is performed using only Vitamin C, there was only a 21% inhibition of AGEs.

In-vitro evaluation of the stimulation of the fibroblast (cells that produce collagen in the skin) proliferation showed that Radical Defence Serum causes a 20% increase in cell proliferation after 48 hours and 22% after 72 hours.

This also showed a 15% increase in collagen production.

Together these two tests clearly demonstrate that by the neutralisation of RCS, Radical Defence Serum significantly protects collagen and boosts its production.

 

Intensive Triple Action Eye Cream

Suitable for all skin types and designed specifically for the delicate skin around the eyes, this innovative eye cream reduces puffiness, tightens the skin, reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fights the environmental damage caused by free radicals. Active Ingredients in Zelens products:

Acetyl tyrosine is an amino acid naturally occurring in skin. It promotes melanin (skin pigment) production, aiding tanning process and colour distribution in the skin.

ATP is a multifunctional nucleotide that acts as a carrier of energy within cells. ATP serves as the major energy source within the cell to drive a number of biological processes including cellular regeneration.

Allantoin is a healing, moisturizing, soothing and anti-irritating natural ingredient. It has a pronounced skin softening action and acts as a debrider of scaling tissue. Allantoin can speed wound healing.

Almond oil is rich in essential fatty acids and Vitamins A, B1, B2, B6 and E. It protects the skin from drying and improves the skin’s barrier function, keeping it smooth and supple.

Aloe vera contains naturally occurring antioxidants in the form of vitamins B complex, C and E and Beta-carotene which is converted by the body into Vitamin A. Aloe Vera extract acts in three main ways: has anti-inflammatory properties, promotes wound healing and regeneration and acts as an antioxidant.

Bisabolol is an active molecule extracted from Camomile. Bisabolol is known to have anti-irritant, anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties.

Carnosine is a natural amino-acid with a number of actions. It is a potent antioxidant that prevents cell damage and improves cell function. Carnosine is a strong inhibitor of glycosylation (the cross linking of proteins and DNA molecules caused by sugars) and of the generation of Advance Glycosylation End-products (AGE’s) that are important mechanism in the process of skin ageing.

Centella Asiatica is a herb with powerful antioxidant activity. It exerts a balancing effect on connective tissue by stimulating the production of collagen and improving the function of the skin’s connective tissue. Centella promotes wound healing and stimulate the formation of lipids and proteins necessary for healthy skin.

Coenzyme Q10, otherwise known as ubiquinone, is a cellular antioxidant present in most tissues of the body, including the skin. It strongly controls oxidative DNA damage in the cells. Coenzyme Q10 also blocks the degradation of collagen, resulting in the wrinkle reduction.

Ginkgo Biloba has purported anti-ageing effects on skin. Ginkgo is rich in bioflavonoids which have free radical-scavenging properties and anti-inflammatory activities. It considerably improves circulation resulting in increased oxygen utilisation. Gingko also has enhancing effect on synthesis of collagen by stimulating the proliferation of fibroblasts.

Glucosamine has several beneficial effects on the skin and skin cells. It has both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Glucosamine can slow down melanin production in skin cells leading to significant reduction of the amount and appearance of hyperpigmentation and age spots. Glucosamine stimulates hyaluronic acid synthesis and thus accelerates wound healing, improves skin hydration, and decreases wrinkles.

Glycerin is a natural by-product of the soapmaking process. It serves as emollient and humectant (substance that helps retain moisture).

Glycyrrhetinic acid is isolated from Glycyrrihiza glabra (licorice root). It has anti-inflammatory properties and it can inhibit production of superoxide free radicals. Glycyrrhetinic acid also inhibits tyrosinase activity of melanocytes and it can be used as whitening agent.

Green Tea contains high level of polyphenols which are bioflavenoids that have significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The major polyphenol in Green Tea is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). EGCG has photoprotective effects against UV radiation. Green Tea accelerates skin cell’s reactivation and rejuvenation and promotes wound healing.

Honeysuckle works as a detoxifier, anti-inflammatory and anti-irritant.

Hyaluronic Acid is a naturally occurring sugar molecule existing in the large quantities in the skin, used in cosmetics in its salt form. It has excellent emollient and moisturizing properties. Hyaluronate restores these vital qualities of the skin when they are lost, as occurs with the natural aging process, and in cases of extreme dryness.

Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein is a water-soluble vegetable protein that strengthens and conditions skin.

Jojoba Oil has excellent emollient and lubricating properties. It help restore elasticity, increases the skin’s suppleness, softens and smoothes the skin. Jojoba Oil also helps to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

Ketoglutaric Acid is a naturally-occurring ingredient formed primarily as part of the citric acid cycle inside cells. The most important function of ketoglutaric acid is to detoxify ammonia from tissues. It also enhances production of cellular energy which is important for cell repair and regeneration.

Lactoperoxidase is an enzyme with strong antioxidant activity.

Panthenol is the provitamin of Vitamin B5. This plant-derived ingredient is essential to normal epithelial function and regeneration of epidermal cells of the skin. It acts like a moisturizer, improving skin hydration, reducing transepidermal water loss and maintaining skin softness and elasticity. Panthenol promotes wound healing.

Perilla is widely known as a Japanese Mint. It has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-allergenic properties.

Proline is an amino acid. It is the precursor to Hydroxyproline, which is essential in collagen production. This is necessary for tissue repair and wound healing. Proline also stimulates DNA.

Pycnogenol is a natural plant ingredient extracted from the pine bark. It has powerful free radical scavenging activity, and can counteract the effects of ageing. It is also a natural anti-inflammatory. By stimulating nitric oxide production, Pycnogenol may improve the skin’s circulation. Pycnogenol provides remarkable support to strengthen and rebuild skin’s natural collagen.

Rosehip is a plant rich in antioxidants. It helps to fight free radical damage and promotes new cell growth. High amount of essential fatty acids in Rosehip supports the skin’s elasticity and keep it well-nourished.

Shea Butter is extracted from the almond-like fruit of the African Karite tree. The Karite tree can live up to 300 years and does not start producing fruit until it is 40 to 50 years old. Shea butter has been used for centuries in Africa to alleviate conditions of the skin and scalp. It has a high content of non-saponifiable fatty acids which aid to moisturize and retain the elasticity of the skin.

Spin Traps are special molecules with strong antioxidant activity. They can trap and detoxify damaging free radicals.

Sunflower Seed Oil is very high in essential fatty acids. It helps to moisturize, regenerate and condition the skin.

SOD is an enzyme that strongly protects the skin against the effects of free radicals and thus combats skin ageing. In addition, SOD improves the skin cell respiration and maintains or enhances the qualities of the skin such as softness to the touch, suppleness and elasticity.

Thioctic Acid is also known as alpha-lipoic acid. It acts as a strong natural antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties. Thioctic acid increases cellular energy production, which is very important for DNA protection and skin cell regeneration.

Vitamin A is included in the ingredients in the form of its derivate called Retinyl Palmitate. It is necessary for skin repair. Vitamin A acts as a natural exfoliant that helps rid the skin of dead cells. It significantly increases skin composition to increase collagen, DNA, skin thickness, and elasticity. Vitamin A acts also as an antioxidant.

Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) has numerous roles in the maintenance of skin health. It is known as a strong antioxidant able to neutralise free radicals. It also has anti-inflammatory effects. Vitamin C increases production of collagen as well as the decreases production of matrix metalloproteinase, an enzyme which enhances dermal collagen degradation, resulting in significant reduction of fine lines and wrinkles. Vitamin C also helps to regenerate vitamin E while combination of Vitamin C and Vitamin E provides significant protection against oxidative damage in the skin.

Vitamin E (tocopherol) is an antioxidant which plays key roles in protecting cellular membranes from free radicals. It is the major antioxidant in the human epidermis, and its depletion is an early marker of environmental oxidative damage. Vitamin E has strong protective effects against skin photoageing.

Wheatgerm is rich in Vitamins A, E, D and essential fatty acids. It serves as an antioxidant and natural preservative. It promotes renewal of new skin cells and improves circulation. Wheatgerm also has nourishing properties.
